Making Good is a gripping short drama that delves into the emotional chaos of a painter struggling with his father’s suicide and mounting debts. Set over several turbulent days, the film captures the raw intensity of the lead character’s journey as he and his business partner confront hidden truths and personal demons in their desperate fight for survival.

Key Elements:

  • Intimate, character-driven storytelling set against a backdrop of financial and emotional turmoil.
  • Dynamic and shifting colour palette to reflect the emotional highs and lows of the lead character.
  • High-contrast cinematography using shadowy aesthetics to mirror the darker themes.
  • Bold red washes during intense nightclub scenes transitioning to cold blues of the night, emphasizing the painter's emotional state.

My Role: As the director of photography, editor, and colourist, I was tasked with visually conveying the story's sense of intimacy and chaos. Through the use of dynamic camera work and a sweeping colour palette, the film shifts between bold and shadowy visuals to mirror the emotional turmoil of the characters.

Visual Style: A high contrast curve was applied to craft a shadowy, atmospheric look. Bold reds in the nightclub scenes express intensity, while colder, blue tones of the night sequences capture the isolating moments of the lead character. This dynamic approach adds depth to the visual storytelling, mirroring the character's internal struggle.

Conclusion: Making Good is a visually charged drama that tells a deeply personal story of survival and self-discovery. The combination of intimate camerawork, dynamic editing, and a shifting colour palette was designed to enhance the emotional impact of the film’s narrative and provide viewers with an immersive and visceral experience.
